Why Encounter: Travel for Transformation?

  • Did you know that studying in a country for a minimum of six weeks to a semester equips college students with language acquisition needed in many careers, internships opportunities, and a global understanding of humanity?

  • Did you know that financial aid rarely covers summer study abroad and many students cannot study during a semester abroad because of course sequence commitments, athletic obligations, and job requirements?

Sharenda Barlar, Program Leader

This idea grew out of frustrations that I felt every year as Spanish professor who leads summer programs. For over 20 years, I’ve had to turn students away from a program because they did not have the funds to cover the costs. I’ve seen students’ lives completely change while living abroad and learning from others, so I was determined to come up with a plan. As the official tour guide for my friends and family, why not create educational and transformative experiences for others AND give back to deserving students? I knew I couldn’t do it alone, so I created a team of experts in their fields who bring wisdom and experience to Encounter.

Eyersalem Cheney, Student

As a Political Science major with a certificate in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, I have a deep passion for history, politics, and government. Growing up in East Africa under an unstable and corrupt government sparked my interest in good governance. After moving to the United States at the age of 12, I learned English and started to develop my desire for politics through reading books. I am currently a junior at Wheaton College and recently had the opportunity to study abroad in the Nordic countries, known for being the happiest places on earth. This experience allowed me to meet political leaders and US foreign service officers, further fueling my interest in foreign service. In my free time, I enjoy listening to podcasts related to economics, history, and politics, taking walks, savoring good coffee, and spending time with friends. I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in a study abroad and excited to see how I will grow and learn in the future.
